Spring has arrived, bringing with it a fresh start and new opportunities. As the weather warms up, it’s crucial to stay informed about the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) plans for the upcoming months. Let’s take a look at what’s in store and how we can prepare.

First, it’s important to note the changes to the Out-of-Service Criteria (OOSC) that come into effect on April 1st each year. This year’s updates include clarifications on false logs, ensuring that falsified logs are appropriately categorized as violations or imminent hazards.

Spring and Summer

Additionally, ELD-exempt drivers who use computer-assisted logs will no longer face penalties for not printing out those logs. Furthermore, drivers will no longer be placed out-of-service solely for being under the influence of drugs more than 24 hours prior. For more details on the OOSC changes, you can refer to the CVSA’s document, which provides a comprehensive overview of this year’s updates.

In May, the CVSA will hold its annual International Roadcheck from the 16th to the 18th. This inspection event takes place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States and focuses on anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement. ABS is a crucial component in accident avoidance, allowing drivers to maintain control of their vehicles while braking. Cargo securement, on the other hand, accounted for a significant portion of out-of-service violations during last year’s Roadcheck. To learn more about this year’s Roadcheck and access the CVSA’s inspection tip sheet, you can refer to the recent Safety Bulletin.

Operation Safe Driver Week, taking place from July 9th to the 15th, shifts the focus to driver behavior. Law enforcement will be on high alert during this week, targeting any commercial or passenger vehicles that are driving in an unsafe or dangerous manner. Preemptive enforcement by police officers has been proven to reduce the likelihood of serious incidents. For detailed data and further information, you can visit the CVSA’s website.

Lastly, the CVSA is accepting nominations for the International Driver Excellence Award of 2023. The winner will receive a $5000 prize and will be invited to accept the award at the CVSA’s Annual Conference and Exhibition in Grapevine, Texas. Nominees do not need to be CVSA members or affiliated with the organization. For all the nomination details, visit the provided link.

As we embrace the arrival of spring, let’s stay informed and prepared for the initiatives and events organized by the CVSA. By adhering to the updates in the Out-of-Service Criteria, participating in the International Roadcheck, promoting safe driving during Operation Safe Driver Week, and recognizing exceptional drivers through nominations for the International Driver Excellence Award, we contribute to a safer and more responsible road environment.
